My Capstone Project: LYRICAL EVOLUTION – TIME SERIES & NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING CAPSTONE
Using web scraping, our group acquired lyrics for 25k+ songs appearing on the Billboard Hot 100 from 1958 to Present. We investigated patterns in lyrics across decades using methods such as Topic Modeling, Sentiment Analysis, and Term Frequency, overlaying observations with historical and cultural events, identifying a major cultural shift beginning in the 90’s. We then created a classification model to predict the decade of a song given its lyrics, resulting in a 191% improvement upon baseline.
